Reykjavík Sounds

What does Reykjavík sound like?

Role and collaboration
Concept and design: Friðrik Steinn Friðriksson.

Reykjavík Sounds explores the city through listening. Rather than beginning with buildings and landmarks, the project focuses on the everyday sounds that shape our experience of a place.

The recordings capture situations around Reykjavík: a walk through the National Gallery, a bus ride and a moment on a busy street. Heard on their own, these sounds invite listeners to imagine the setting and connect it with memories of their own.

The project grew out of a course on Icelandic culture and an interest in how sound can create an atmosphere for reflection and inspiration. Together, the recordings form a sound portrait of the city and ask what we want it to sound like.
